Senator Saland Announces State Grant For Rehab Of St. Margaret’s Home - Red Hook

Built over 150 years ago as a home for girls under age sixteen who were provided housing and an education, St. Margaret’s Home was converted to a private residence in the 1930s, then became a group home, was subsequently closed in the 1990s and is now owned by the Town of Red Hook. Significant deterioration of the brick and brownstone building has caused it to become unsafe.

“The St. Margaret’s Home building is a beautiful example of 1850s architecture which has, unfortunately fallen into disrepair,” said Senator Saland. “I am pleased the grant I secured will help stabilize the roof and prevent further deterioration which occurred when the inside was exposed to the elements. I am pleased to work with Supervisor Crane and the Town Board to help provide a community center which will become a hub of activity in the Town for people of all ages.”

Sue Crane, Supervisor of the Town of Red Hook said, “Once again, the Town of Red Hook is indebted and enormously grateful to Senator Stephen Saland for sponsoring essential funding for a community project. Through Senator Saland’s sponsorship of a Community Capital Assistance Program grant, $90,000 will be utilized for the roof stabilization of the Town-owned St. Margaret’s Home. The historic building has been earmarked for renovation and reuse for community programs. Built in 1853 by Margaret Armstrong Astor to house and educate neglected girls, the building has fallen into disrepair. Recently acquired by the Town of Red Hook thorough a corporate donation, the “Tuscan Villa” style house will undergo long-range restoration with the roof stabilization being the initial and crucial development. We are immensely grateful to Senator Saland for sponsoring this vital funding for the long-term benefit of the community of Red Hook.”
