Senator Steve Saland Announces The Signing Of His Bill To Help Improve New York’s Water Quality

Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced the Governor has signed his bill (S.6098) which establishes a linked deposit program in order for lenders to make low-interest loans to eligible borrowers for water pollution control projects.

"Safeguarding our water supply is one of the most important efforts we can make to protect both the health of New Yorkers and our environment," said Senator Saland. "But eligible projects, including some farms, often find that remediating water pollution problems is cost prohibitive, and our environment can suffer as a result," Saland continued.

"This bill establishes a mechanism to provide much needed low-interest loans to help farmers protect water quality on their farms. Since the traditional Linked Deposit program has been so successful, including the agricultural sector in the program is a natural fit," said John W. Lincoln, President, New York Farm Bureau. "New York farmers work every day to care for our environment. This legislation will allow the agricultural community to further protect the Empire State’s excellent water quality. We thank Senator Saland for his sponsorship of this bill and leadership within the agricultural community," concluded Lincoln.

This legislation builds upon the State’s firm commitment to protect the health of its citizens and safeguard the environment for future generations. Low interest loans are critical to help homeowners and small businesses address on-site waste water treatment and non-point source pollution control projects.

This new law becomes effective in 180 days.
