Bike Summit Features Ways To Make Roads Safer for Cyclists

Cycling enthusiasts, political figures, state and local officials, environmentalists and planners will gather at the Greenburgh Town Hall May 6, for the 2nd annual Westchester Bike Summit. The focus of the session is, “to make the region more friendly to those who get around on two wheels,” according to the Bike Walk Alliance of Westchester and Putnam.

Among the event’s speakers is State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, who introduced legislation, known as Merrill’s Law, earlier this year aimed at making bikers safer on New York roads. The law amends existing legislation and requires that motor vehicles passing bikers heading in the same direction, “when circumstances are practical, leave a safe distance of at least three feet between such vehicle’s passenger side and the bicyclist...”

“This legislation is a common sense solution that can help reduce the number of accidents that claim far too many lives and cause far too many injuries each year,” Stewart-Cousins said. The bill was named after Merrill Cassell, a devoted biker and safety advocate, who was killed by a vehicle while cycling in Greenburgh.
