They have been excluded for decades from protection under virtually all of America’s labor laws. Now the rights of household workers are being guaranteed in our state, the first in the nation to establish basic rules for their employment.

 In a historic step, Gov. Paterson has signed into law job benefits for domestic employees, including nannies, housekeepers and companions to the sick and elderly.

Ms. Savino is optimistic, of course.

“With the signing of the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights,” she says, “we will dramatically improve the lives of those who care for our children, our seniors and our homes, those who make all other work possible.”
