STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- May has been declared Tourette Syndrome Awareness month in New York state, said sponsors of a resolution to that end, Assemblyman Matthew Titone and state Sen. Diane Savino.
TS is a neurological disorder of repetitive involuntary movements and vocalizations. Some 200,000 Americans are afflicted with severe forms of TS, the onset of which is usually seen in childhood.
Ms. Savino (D-North Shore/Brooklyn) said public awareness of the disorder will "encourage people to seek medical attention early, in order to get the assistance they need."
