Golden Seeks Street Renaming Honors for Longtime Bensonhurst Business Leader

Brooklyn -- State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C, Brooklyn) today is announcing that he has asked Community Board 11 to consider renaming the corner of Bay 34th Street and 86th Street in honor of longtime Bensonhurst community business leader Anthony Neglia.

In a letter sent to Chariman William Guarinello, Senator Golden wrote, "The late Anthony Neglia was a man dedicated to the Bensonhurst community. At so many levels, Tony proved his love and dedication for Brooklyn and only wanted the best for the neighborhood of Bensonhurst which he called home. This renaming would ensure that his legacy would live on."

Senator Golden acknowledged his many years as a leader of the 86th Street-Bensonhurst Community merchants and his work with the stores, the City of New York and industries to make the shopping district thrive. The request also highlighted that the 86th Street Festival was an idea of Anthony’s, which has become a popular annual event that supports local business.

Senator Golden continued, "From the looks of 86th Street today, Tony’s dream of making a better 86th Street has come true and it would be most fitting in recognition of this, to rename the corner of Bay 34th Street and 86th Street for him. This honor would also show the community’s appreciation of his other charitable and professional accomplishments and I would ask Community Board 11 to approve this request."

The late Anthony Neglia was a member of Community Board 11 as well as the Kiwanis Club. Throughout his career, Mr. Neglia was active with the Bensonhurst Board of Trade, the Joint Council of Kings County Board of Trade, the Retail Labor Consumer Federation, the Decorating Products Dealers Association and the Peoples Choice Home Decorating & Conservation Show.
