Officials Want To Keep NYC Dominican Day Parade Fun And Safe

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — This Sunday is the 30th Annual Dominican Day Parade and while it promises to be a day full of floats, music and fun, what officials say it won’t be is disorderly.

Sixth Avenue will turn into the celebration of Dominican heritage on Sunday. After the parade, the party moves uptown and local city officials want to keep it festive and fun.

After the parade last year, drunken revelers took over ten blocks of Washington Heights and a 16- year-old pregnant teen was stabbed in the back of the head.

“We’re jumping ahead of this and saying this time, that type of behavior will not be tolerated,” said state Sen. Adriano Espaillat. 

“If they try to take the streets again, it will not be acceptable,” said Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez.

Officials say in addition to an increased police presence, there will also be a crackdown on sugary alcoholic drinks sold to minors.

The parade kicks off at 11 a.m. and will come through 6th Avenue between 36 and 56 streets.
