Senator Marcellino & Island Harvest Food Drive

Carl L Marcellino

Together We Can End Hunger on Long Island!

Senator Carl L. Marcellino is partnering with Island Harvest to collect food on  August 26th  from 2pm - 6pm  at the Stop & Shop located at 177 Forest Ave in Glen Cove.

The food drive comes in response to the hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders are in need of food. According to a report, entitled “Hunger in America 2010,” presented last year, one out of 10 Long Islanders seeks relief from hunger each year at food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters.

It is estimated that there are 320,000 Long Islanders who are hungry or food insecure each day. An even greater 49 percent have to choose between food and rent.

“In times of pressing need – whether your family has recently lost their job or your paycheck just isn’t covering the rising cost of food it’s clear we need to work together to make sure the food pantries are stocked and able to provide help,” said Senator Marcellino

In addition demand for food assistance during the summer months climbs. This is caused in-part by the loss of school lunch & breakfast benefits for many children, and their families’ scramble for assistance to make up for these losses while school is out for the summer.

“I ask that you help us help those in need by dropping off a food item, it will be greatly appreciated,” concluded Senator Marcellino.

Suggested items include canned vegetables, including tomatoes and tomato sauce, meat, fish or fruits, soups, peanut butter, pasta, cereals, dry milk, almond or soy milk, baby formula, spices, coffee, tea, personal care items, nutritional beverages (ex. Boost, Ensure) or personal hygiene items.
