SHED THE MEDS

Senator Carl L. Marcellino is partnering with Assemblyman Jim Conte,  the Suffolk County Police Department and the  Huntington  Fire Department to help residents safely dispose of their expired or unused medications.

The “Shed the Meds” program will take place 10 am to 1 pm,  Saturday  November 19^th   at the Huntington Fire Department on Leverich Place in Huntington. Residents can drop off any medication that has expired or they no longer need, where it will be collected and safely disposed of by officers from the Suffolk County Police Department.

“When old medication is just left around the house, there’s a potential for those drugs to be misused by someone else, you just don’t know. However flushing them down the drain is not the answer because they could work their way into our water system. Here on Long Island we drink the water beneath our feet so we must do all we can to continue to protect that supply,” said Senator Carl Marcellino.

“If you are like most people, setting aside time to properly dispose of old medication is usually not high on our priority list. But abuse and addiction involving prescription drugs found in homes is devastating families and taking the lives of too many of our children. Secure drug take-back programs like Shed the Meds are the right way to get medicines safely out of our homes,” said Assemblyman Jim Conte

Throwing out medication improperly, such as flushing them in the toilet or pouring them down the drain, can cause them to pollute local waterways or our drinking water. Safe disposal helps protect the environment and keeps medications out of the hands of young children or others who would use them improperly.
