Hydraulic Fracturing statement

Joseph P. Addabbo Jr

I have stood against the process of hydraulic fracturing since it was brought to my attention in 2009, and remain opposed to this practice for the detrimental effects are great and
numerous in such states as Pennsylvania, which had adopted hydraulic
fracturing operations several years prior. I have cosponsored S.5592,
which suspends hydraulic fracturing for the extraction of natural gas or
oil, and prohibits the issuance of new permits for the drilling of a well
utilizing the practice of hydraulic fracturing, until June 1, 2012. In
addition, I have sponsored a bill (S.4251) which would require the
promulgation of regulations requiring treatment works to test waste from
hydraulic fracturing operations for radioactivity. I learned
treatment plants are not equipped to remove many of the toxic materials in
drilling waste, hence the reasoning in introducing this legislation at this
time. I intend to keep New York’s drinking water as one of the cleanest in
the nation and continue to urge for greater environmental oversight and rules monitoring
hydraulic fracturing operations.
