Wager Honored in Street Co-Naming

Queens Gazette wrote an article about the event co-naming part of Steinway Street the "Julie Wager Way." Senator Gianaris, a friend and supporter of Julie Wager, spoke at the event. 

Members of Julie Wager’s family along with Councilmember Peter F. Vallone Jr., state Senator Michael Gianaris, Assemblymember Aravella Simotas, Congressmember Carolyn Maloney and Central Astoria Local Development Coalition President George Stamatiades, gathered together amid a friendly crowd on June 30 for the co-naming of the corner of Steinway Street and Broadway, Julie Wager Way.

Family, friends and local officials exchanged stories of their lost friend.

“Julie Wager was one-of-a-kind. He was a true champion for our neighborhood,” state Senator Gianaris said. “It makes perfect sense to name a portion of Steinway Street in his honor.”

Julie Wager, a native of Astoria, was the advertising director of the Queens Gazette; founder and president of the Central Astoria Local Development Coalition for more than 30 years; president of the Steinway Astoria Partnership, formerly the Steinway Business Improvement District, president of the Steinway Street Merchants Association; a member for more than 30 years of Community Board 1 and chairman of its Industrial, Commercial, Cable TV and Communications (Economic Development) Committee; and member of the board of directors of the Variety Boys and Girls Club.
