Students Encouraged To Participate In Earth Day Competition

Michael Gianaris

The Queens Gazette posted Senator Gianaris' announcement of the 2012 Earth Day Competition, which he encourages all students in his Western Queens district to participate in.

In celebration of Earth Day, state Senator Michael Gianaris is inviting elementary school students in his Western Queens district to participate in the Earth Day Competition 2012. This poster contest gives children the opportunity to illustrate the importance of improving the environment.

The theme for this year’s Earth Day contest is “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”.

“As we continue to recognize our impact on the environment, we must ensure the next generation understands the importance of recycling and waste reduction,” Gianaris said. “It is critical that children understand the importance of improving our environment, and this competition is a fun, educational way for them to get involved. I encourage students to participate and look forward to seeing their creative submissions.”

The senator is a longtime advocate for environmental improvement, having authored the Clean Energy Act and other legislative proposals to better protect and conserve our environment. This competition is an effort to increase awareness of our responsibility to be greener and more eco-friendly.

All submissions will be displayed on the senator’s Web site, with the winning poster as the featured piece. Participants will also receive a special certificate from Gianaris in recognition of completing the project.

Earth Day this year is April 22 and student submissions for competition are due by March 9.
