Hammondsport, N.Y., January 31—On the final day of voting in Budget Travel magazine’s online competition to decide the “Coolest Small Town in America 2012,” Hammondsport (Steuben County) is tied for the lead.

Early this morning, Hammondsport and Beaufort, North Carolina had each gathered 34.9% of the vote.

Online voting closes at midnight today.

Over the past week State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) has joined the Hammondsport Chamber of Commerce to urge residents from throughout his 53rd Senate District to “help show our support for one of our great local small towns and take this opportunity to put the Finger Lakes region on the national map once again.”

According to the magazine, Budget Travel readers nominated a record 647 towns from across America this year.  That number is now down to 10 finalists.  In addition to Hammondsport, the other finalists are: Beaufort, North Carolina; Cape May, New Jersey; Cooke City, Montana; Damascus, Virginia; Jerome, Arizona; Nashville, Indiana; Port Townsend, Washington; Ste. Genevieve, Missouri; and Weaverville, California.
