Colonie, NY - A little known tragedy in world history was remembered tonight as Ukrainian Americans in the Capital District begin a week of activities to mark 80 years since the forced famine that killed millions in the 1930’s.

An exhibit on what’s called the Holodomor, or death by hunger, is on display all week at the Colonie Town Library.

On Monday night the library was also the site of the screening of a documentary on the famine genocide.

The Committee to Commemorate the Ukrainian Famine Genocide says they have two goals: to commemorate and educate, and are working to have the Holodomor included in the New York State curriculum.

Assemblywoman Shelley Meyers and Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins have agreed to sponsor a bill to these goals.
