Senator Marcellino Asks You to “SHED THE MEDS”
Senator Carl L. Marcellino is partnering with the Suffolk County Department, the Centerport Fire Department and the Huntington Fire Department to help residents safely dispose of their expired or unused medications.
The “Shed the Meds” programs will take place Tuesday, July 16, from 3 pm to 6 pm at the Centerport Fire Department 9 Park Circle, Centerport and on Saturday, August 3, from 9 am to Noon at the Huntington Fire Department, 1 Leverich Place, Huntington.
Residents can drop off any medication that has expired or they no longer need, where it will be collected and safely disposed of by officers from the Suffolk County Police Department.
Throwing out medication improperly, such as flushing them in the toilet or pouring them down the drain, can cause them to pollute local waterways or our drinking water. Safe disposal helps protect the environment and keeps medications out of the hands of young children or others who would use them improperly.
“When old medication is just left around the house, there’s a potential for those drugs to be misused by someone else, you just don’t know. However flushing them down the drain is not the answer because they could work their way into our water system. Here on Long Island we drink the water beneath our feet so we must do all we can to continue to protect that supply,” said Senator Marcellino.
Residents who have questions about the programs can call Senator Marcellino’s Office at 516-922-1811.
