O'Mara, Palmesano will attend this morning's ceremony for the latest Monterey Shock Incarceration graduating class, continue to urge public support to 'Keep Monterey Open!'

Beaver Dams, N.Y., September 26—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) will attend this morning's ceremony for the latest graduating class from the Monterey Shock Incarceration program.

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Monterey Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility in Beaver Dams, Schuyler County (2150 Evergreen Hill Road). 

In late July, the Cuomo administration announced plans to close Monterey and three other state correctional facilities over the next 12 months as part of a statewide downsizing and consolidation initiative.

O’Mara, Palmesano, Assemblyman Chris Friend and Congressman Tom Reed have joined other local leaders, Monterey employees and area residents to spearhead an ongoing effort urging the Cuomo administration to reconsider its decision to close the facility, noting the loss of community service provided by the facility, loss of local jobs and other local economic consequences that will result from shutting Monterey.  

They’re also highlighting Monterey’s record of fiscal and correctional services success – a record which was praised by the administration itself just last September as part of the facility’s 25th Anniversary celebration.  

Monterey was New York’s first “shock” facility. There are currently 124 employees at the Monterey facility.  

O'Mara and Palmesano also reminded area residents that they can show their support for keeping Monterey open through an online petition drive that's been started to rally public support.  To sign the petition, CLICK HERE.
