Town of Cicero to receive $100,000 state grant to build playground for children of all abilities

Town of Cicero -- The town of Cicero will receive a $100,000 grant from State Sen. David Valesky, D-Oneida, to install a community playground that will accommodate all children and their families, including those with special needs.

The playground will be built at Central Park, which is located 6540 Route 31, in Cicero. Central Park is 25 acres that already has public accessible restrooms, a pavilion, picnic tables, water fountain, security lighting and parking adjacent to the park.

The park currently has two underused tennis courts that the town plans to remove. The town will install a child-friendly, inclusive play area and benches. The play area will be built to accommodate children 3 to 12 years old. The play area will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and follow all the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission regulations, according to the town.

The town's goal is to build a playground that is safe for children of all abilities, including children with special needs and parents and family members with special needs, including Wounded Warriors.

The park is currently maintained by the town's parks and recreation staff and that process will continue with this added facility.

The project is currently in its design phase and installation is scheduled for late summer of 2014.
