GREENPORT — Calling all senior citizens across the Twin Counties.

Mark the calendars for this Saturday.

The 23rd annual Golden Gathering hosted by State Sen. Kathy Marchione, R-43, will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Columbia-Greene Community College.

“With health care costs continuing to rise, it’s important that senior citizens – and all families – take advantage of the free health care services available at the Golden Gathering that I am once again honored to sponsor,” Marchione said.

Each year the free health fair draws hundreds of seniors and their families to the college campus to offer them a chance to speak with more than 75 exhibitors.

Marchione described the fair as “a non-political, well-attended event that helps improve the quality of life for senior citizens and their families.”

The event started with former State Sen. Stephen Saland, who had represented the 41st Senate District from 1990-2012, the district included Columbia County and a majority of Dutchess County.

After hearing how popular the event was and how it helped so many people in Columbia County, Marchione decided to continue the tradition.

She wanted to make sure even more residents had access to the free health care services provided at the event.

This year, seniors will be able to get free identification cards courtesy of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. Marchione said the ID cards are being sponsored by Sheriff David Bartlett and are expected to be a big hit.

“These free senior citizen ID cards can be a critical identification resource for senior citizens in the event of an emergency,” Marchione said. “I urge every senior citizen — and every family — to attend the Golden Gathering and access the many free health care services being provided.”

Visitors can expect a free flu shot clinic for the uninsured, sponsored by Mid-Hudson Cable, along with free blood pressure and hearing screenings.

Any person who has health insurance has been asked to bring their insurance card with them to get any of the screenings or shots.

A car safety check for grandparents will be provided by the Hudson Police Department.

A classic car show will return to the campus lawn and an Elvis impersonator will also be on hand with the Columbia-Greene Humane Society sponsoring a table on pet adoption.

Anyone who is interested in getting more information on the Golden Gathering can call Marchione’s office in Halfmoon, Saratoga County, at 371-2751.
