Summer In LIC, The Place to Be

Born and raised in western Queens, I’ve always known that Long Island City has so much to offer for residents and visitors alike. Through firsthand experience, I watched LIC develop over the years into the dynamic community it is today.

Home to more than 30 cultural institutions, Long Island City is well known for its thriving arts scene. With our residents housing a deep appreciation for the arts, it allows for our community to present numerous opportunities to come together, take part in traditions and make terrific, long-lasting memories.

Summertime in the city means enjoying the outdoors and escaping the heat, and Hunters Point South Park is a splendid place to do just that. Located on the waterfront of Long Island City, one can enjoy the famous Manhattan skyline while reading a book on a park bench or taking part in a community run. But the East River view doesn’t stop there. Next to Hunters Point South Park is Gantry State Plaza Park, where one can find the glowing neon Pepsi-Cola sign and participate in recreational activities, such as my personal favorite, a vigorous bike ride.

In the mood for something delicious? Whatever your culinary desire, LIC is sure to meet your needs. Home to restaurants rated among the best in New York for BBQ, Mexican and other cuisines, LIC serves up sensational food, whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner, from all over the world.

The Long Island City Partnership plays an enormous role in helping our neighborhood develop into a thriving economic hub. Our community continues to benefit from the ongoing economic development and job creation right here in LIC. 

Having a diverse neighborhood and a rapidly growing community means making sure that our infrastructure keeps pace. I am proud I helped bring CitiBike to western Queens and successfully advocated for expanded and more reliable bus service on the Q102 and Q103 lines, serving Vernon Boulevard. I will continue to work towards keeping our neighborhood one of the city’s more bike-friendly areas and will continue to pressure the MTA to address our ever-expanding transportation needs.

As residential real estate continues to boom and new developments emerge, it is vital that everyone has access to safe, decent and affordable housing so that those who made our neighborhood great can continue to live here. It is important to meet the necessary demands of our neighborhood’s growing population including the addition of new elementary and middle schools. As a product of PS 84, IS 141, and Long Island City High School, I am committed to working with parents and educators to ensure every child excels during his or her time in our school system, and is prepared for a bright future after graduation.

I am privileged to represent our vibrant and exciting neighborhood in the New York State Senate. I invite New Yorkers from all corners of the city to come and see for themselves all that western Queens has to offer, and I look forward to seeing my neighbors in Long Island City out and about this summer!
