Area counties to receive federal emergency preparedness and response funding

"This aid will help many of our local first responders enhance their readiness to respond to disasters and emergencies," said O'Mara.

Elmira, N.Y., March 4—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C,I-Big Flats) welcomed the announcement by state and federal leaders that area counties will receive nearly $700,000 of the $60 million in federal grants being distributed to every county in New York State to enhance local disaster and emergency response preparedness, and counterterrorism efforts.

The federal Department of Homeland Security is providing the funding through its State Homeland Security Program (SHSP) and Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG) to assist all of the counties O’Mara represents as part of the 58th Senate District – Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tompkins and Yates.

“Communities and counties throughout the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions know as well as anyone the importance of being prepared for disasters and emergencies,” said O’Mara. “We appreciate this federal aid to strengthen and support the ability of our local first responders to enhance their readiness to protect the safety and security of our local communities and neighborhoods.”
