Queens pol reveals bill to ban N.Y. pet stores buying from puppy mills

ALBANY — Pet stores in New York would only be allowed to sell dogs and cats obtained from an animal shelter or rescue under a bill introduced by a Queens lawmaker.
State Sen. Michael Gianaris’ bill would also ban pet stores from making a profit on the sales of dogs and cats. It is intended to crack down on so-called puppy mills that breed animals under inhumane conditions.
“With thousands of good animals in need of homes, there is no need for notorious puppy mills to supply pet stores,” Gianaris, a Democrat, said. “Our four-legged companions should be treated with respect, not like commodities.”
