Wall Street Journal: After Amazon HQ2, Some Lawmakers Question Nondisclosure Requirements
New York’s roughly $3 billion package of state and city incentives was shrouded in mystery until the announcement earlier this month, and has since sparked some anti-Amazon protests.
Some officials and citizen advocates say NDAs give private companies too much sway over public policy while keeping taxpayers in the dark.
Democratic New York state Sen. Michael Gianaris said he is introducing new legislation that would ban governments from signing nondisclosure agreements with private corporations engaged in economic-development negotiations.
“The secretive process surrounding the Amazon deal sets a dangerous precedent that must be prohibited so that our government answers to the people, not wealthy corporations,” he said in a statement.
