WCBS 880: HQ2 In LIC? Some State Officials Don’t Want An Amazon Base

Democratic state Sen. Michael Gianaris, who represents Long Island City, is staunchly opposed to the idea for a variety of reasons.

He claims one of the top issues is how bringing Amazon to northern Queens would impact transportation.

"Will there be some addressing of the mass transit needs? Because subways are already maxed out and delayed in that neighborhood,” the senator said.

Furthermore, he believes Amazon has a responsibility to improve the neighborhood.

"What is being done by Amazon to make the neighborhood better, that they're hoping to come to, should be the conversation were having, not how much money can we give them to get them here,” Gianaris said.

The Democrat seems to be at odds with Gov. Cuomo on the Amazon debate.

The governor has actively pursued Amazon to get the company to base its operations in the city.  He even said he was willing to change his name to “Amazon Cuomo” to get the retail giant to New York.
