Under the new law, private companies will have to share certain bits of data with the local government but New York State Senator Shelley Mayer said everyone's privacy will be protected.

Municipalities including New Rochelle and Rye, Eastchester, Greenburgh, Mount Pleasant, Ardsley, Bronxville, Dobbs Ferry, Pelham, Port Chester, and Rye Brook all asked Mayer for the law.

"We really must invest in water infrastructure it's one of the things that's so essential," Mayer said. "I believe in water infrastructure and giving all of our towns and cities what they need to invest in water,” Mayer said. "We don't give the person's name, it's just the actual address by usage."

Mayer said the bill will go into effect immediately.
