New York State Senate Passes Bill to Help More New Yorkers Who Struggle with Eating Disorders
New York State Bill S.3101, sponsored by Senator Alessandra Biaggi, passed the Senate with a vote of 53-10. If signed into law by Governor Cuomo, this bill would greatly improve insurance coverage and access to care for eating disorders in New York State. Advocates from the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) have been pushing for this legislation to pass since it was first introduced in 2017.
Senator Alessandra Biaggi has been open about her personal struggle with an eating disorder.
“As a person who has lived with an eating disorder for fifteen years, I can say from experience that my disease is not black and white; eating disorders are complex, devastating conditions that can manifest differently depending on the person. And while recovery is possible, the cost of treatment often stands in the way. The purpose of this bill is to close the gap in healthcare coverage to include all iterations of eating disorders so that every New Yorker striving to overcome this disease – no matter what it looks like – can access the care they need,” said Biaggi.
