State Senate passes limo-safety bills after deadly upstate crash

The state Senate on Thursday passed a slate of bills aimed at preventing fatal limo crashes like the upstate disaster that left 20 dead in October.

The proposals — which are still pending in the Assembly — create stricter licensing and safety requirements while also jacking up fines and penalties for bad actors.

The laws come on the heels of an October smash-up in which a stretch limo with faulty brakes and a slew of other safety violations blew through a stop sign near Schoharie and slammed into a parked car, claiming the lives of all 18 limo occupants and two nearby pedestrians.
