I am going to be a relentless advocate on behalf of those children and their families," Mayer says.

Sen. Shelley Mayer hopes to use her new position as the Chair of the State Education Committee to crack down on a lack of funding for local school districts.

The Yonkers native says she feels responsible for the children in New York and that many have issues regarding their education.

Mayer says her goal is to get more money for education in the state budget.

"The governor put about $338 million of foundation aid," Mayer says. "That's for high-need schools and really we needed at least $1.4 billion to begin the conversation."

She says to find the money they'll have to get creative and avoid hurting tax payers while doing so.

Mayer says her new role will only allow her to work harder for the people she has always stood up for.
