NY pol channels MLK with voting rights act to fight suppression
ALBANY ― A state senator will honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend by rolling out an expansive voter protection package to help New Yorkers battle suppression.
The measure being proposed by Sen. Zellnor Myrie (D-Brooklyn) would establish state laws protecting against voter suppression, as well as racial gerrymandering and other forms of minority vote dilution by the state or local governments.
“There is no better way for us to honor Dr. King’s legacy than to fight fiercely to protect the franchise,” Myrie said. " In the absence of federal protection it is incredibly important that we do what we can as a state to stand up for the rights of voters."
