Step up to stop deed theft: A key foreclosure prevention program is at risk in N.Y.’s state budget
Deed theft scams, which heavily target gentrifying New York City boroughs but exist elsewhere, cost homeowners hundreds of thousands of dollars in equity. This equity should be going towards generational wealth-building.
HOPP depends on the state renewing its funding every year in the budget. In other words, unless the Legislature and governor direct funds to HOPP in this year’s budget, the program will end. HOPP is one of the best tools we have to preserve affordable homeownership, enforce strong laws on the books, and build generational equity for homeowners. Our communities cannot afford to lose it.
