PORT WASHINGTON, NY — A Port Washington woman who sponsors philanthropic causes and promotes Chines cultural understanding and awareness has been honored as a "Woman of Distinction."

New York State Sen. Anna Kaplan (D-North Hills) presented Tai Wang with the award at an intimate ceremony on Sept. 9. Each year, members of the state Senate choose one woman from their respective community who "step(s) up to serve their communities and their neighbors," according to a press release.

"It's my honor and privilege each year to select one exemplary woman from our community who sets herself apart from all others through her work to make our world and our lives better, and I'm thrilled to recognize Tai Wang as my Woman of Distinction for 2021," Kaplan said. "Tai is a trailblazer who has excelled to the heights of success as an entrepreneur, while giving generously of herself to support important causes, and promoting Chinese cultural understanding and awareness."

Wang, her husband, and their one-year-old daughter immigrated to the United States more than 30 years ago, according to Kaplan's office. With the little money they had, the Wangs purchased a grocery retailer in Queens and established WAC Lighting. The company has since grown into one of the largest lighting manufacturers in the world.

In her free time, Wang supports the American Red Cross and sponsors nonprofit organizations and academic institutions that provide higher education opportunities to children. As founder and president of the New York Chinese Chorus and the Glow Foundation, Wang helps celebrate Chinese heritage and spread cultural awareness through festivals, music performances, and dance shows in the New York metro area.

"Tai is living proof that the American Dream still works, she's a treasured member of our community, and an inspiration to us all," Kaplan said.

At last week's ceremony, Wang thanked Kaplan for the award, saying it was an honor to receive such recognition.
