President, local lawmakers react to Micron choosing Central New York for plant
Tuesday morning, Micron announced it will be building a semiconductor manufacturing campus in the Town of Clay.
Micron will invest $100 billion for the project, which is slated to create nearly 50,000 jobs.
President Biden is among those reacting to the announcement, releasing the following statement:
To those who doubted that America could dominate the industries of the future, I say this – you should never bet against the American people. Today is another win for America, and another massive new investment in America spurred by my economic plan. Micron, an American company, is investing $20 billion dollars this decade and up to $100 billion over twenty years in CHIPS manufacturing in upstate New York, creating tens of thousands of good paying jobs. Together, we are building an economy from the bottom up and the middle out, where we lower costs for our families and make it right here in America.
State Senator John Mannion, who represents the 50th district, released the following statement:
Micron could have gone anywhere in the world to invest $100B and create nine thousand jobs - but it chose Central New York and the 50th Senate District for a reason. We have the history, the moxie, and the determination that’s needed to transform our economy into a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing. A successful and coordinated effort across federal, state, and local government was instrumental in securing a deal. President Biden and Senator Schumer made the federal Chips and Science Bill a reality and New York State and Governor Hochul did our part by passing and signing my Green Chips legislation. The road ahead is filled with challenges and it will be an all-hands-on-deck effort to make this partnership a success for our people, communities, Micron, and for American dominance in computer chips and advanced manufacturing. My priorities moving forward are making sure construction jobs are local and securing the significant infrastructure and workforce investments a project of this magnitude demands. Filling nine thousand jobs over the next two decades will be a massive undertaking that brings to scale the apprenticeships and workforce training partnerships that I've proudly funded over the last two years. I look forward to continuing to partner with MACNY, CenterstateCEO, Syracuse University, OCC, the trades, and many others who have been working towards this moment for many years and know what it takes to get the job done
Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli, who represents NY's 129th Assembly District said:
Fantastic news for the Central New York region. It has been a long time coming. A micro chip factory in our area will have lasting positive economic effects for years to come. This is a major step in distinguishing Central New York as an innovative and technologically progressive area with enormous opportunities and potential. We welcome this opportunity and look forward to working with Micron for the benefit of its company and the community overall.
Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh released the following statement:
The rise of Syracuse as one of the leading places in the nation for technology investment is going to the next level. Micron’s commitment to build a ‘mega-complex’ in Onondaga County brings historic energy to the Syracuse Surge, our strategy for inclusive growth in the New Economy. Syracuse and Central New York are honored by Micron’s vote of confidence in the region. I spoke with Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra early this morning and told him Syracuse is ready to help the company compete and lead globally in semiconductor manufacturing, research, and development. I thank President Biden and Majority Leader Schumer for their leadership and Senator Gillibrand and Congressman Katko for their support for this investment. I’m also grateful to Governor Hochul, County Executive McMahon, CenterState CEO and our other local partners for making this day a reality. Syracuse is prepared for the work and partnership ahead to create opportunity for all.
