State Sen. Mannion brings forward bill to cap New York’s sales tax on gasoline

Some New York State lawmakers are calling for the state gas tax to be revoked, but state Senator John Mannion has another solution for rising fuel costs.

Sen. Mannion (D-Geddes) introduced a bill that would cap New York’s sales taxes on gasoline at 8% of $3.09, or 25 cents. Mannion says his plan would freeze state and county taxes on gas if the price is above $3.09 per gallon. The state currently collects a 4% gasoline sales tax, with counties typically setting their gasoline sales tax at 4% as well.

“This legislation strikes the right balance- it’s a decisive action with immediate cost savings for New Yorkers while preserving the state’s need to collect taxes and meet its revenue projections,” said Mannion, according to The Citizen. “There would be no hardships or bureaucratic burdens placed on station owners or wholesalers.”

Governor Kathy Hochul has questioned the wisdom of suspending the gas tax, while some Republicans and Democrats in the state Legislature have called for a full suspension of the state gas tax.
