Ashby, others, urge governor to sign bill to help veterans

by State Senator Jake Ashby

From a press release: After years of advocacy, legislation creating the SSG Alex R. Jimenez New York State Military Immigrant Family Legacy Program unanimously passed both houses of the state Legislature this year.

With the stroke of her pen, the governor can expedite the naturalization process for the undocumented family members of servicemembers and veterans. Ahead of Veterans Day, the bipartisan group of lawmakers who pushed the bill are urging her to do just that.

"As the Chair of the Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee, I firmly believe in New York State's commitment to supporting the courageous men and women who put their lives on the line for our nation. The passage of the New York State Military Immigrant Family Legacy Act will expand upon this commitment— becoming a testament to New York’s dedication to recognizing the sacrifices made by our service members. It’s more than just a token of support; this act is a critical step in expediting the naturalization process for the undocumented family members of service members and veterans. I, along with my colleagues, urge the Governor to fight for our veterans the way they have always fought for us," said Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton.
