Emotional reunion as heroes honored for saving retired Staten Island firefighter: ‘Thank you for not hesitating’
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Tears were shed, hugs were shared and heroes were honored Wednesday morning at a ceremony commemorating those responsible for saving the life of a retired firefighter who’d suffered a heart attack while driving.
New York’s Bravest serve the city, aiding those in need without a moment’s hesitation, but on Aug. 3, 2022, it was retired firefighter John Deliso in need of assistance.
Following Bischoff’s welcome, a series of speakers took to the podium to honor those responsible for saving Deliso. Among them was Capt. John Burke of Engine 152.
After words were shared and heart-strings tugged, the three men were presented with various recognitions and plaques for their role on that day.
Among the awards given were proclamations hand-delivered by state Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, plaques on behalf of Borough President Vito Fossella, and a Commander’s Coin awarded to Poncedeleon by Army Col. John Lloyd, who was also in attendance.
