Former Staten Island senior living facility to become latest migrant shelter to open in NYC
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A former Midland Beach senior living facility will be the latest city migrant shelter, the Advance/SILive.com learned Tuesday.
Since April 2022, more than 110,000 migrants have made their way to the five boroughs with nearly 60,000 remaining in the city’s care.
That influx of newcomers has prompted the city to set up emergency shelters around the five boroughs, including at a pair of hotels in Travis, and the former St. John’s Villa Academy in Arrochar.
Last week, Staten Island elected officials penned a letter to Mayor Eric Adams and Comptroller Brad Lander calling for a contract at the site not to go forward.
Malliotakis, Carr, Borough President Vito Fossella, District Attorney Michael McMahon, State Sen. Andrew Lanza (R-South Shore), State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-North Shore/South Brooklyn), Assemblyman Michael Reilly (R-South Shore), Assemblyman Michael Tannousis (R-East Shore/South Brooklyn), Assemblyman Sam Pirozzolo (R-Mid-Island), City Councilwoman Kamillah Hanks (D-North Shore), and City Councilman Joseph Borelli (R-South Shore) wrote in their letter that they recently learned the city had yet to reach a final contract with the site’s owner, a non-profit organization called Homes for the Homeless, and that lack of contract offered the city an opportunity to reverse course.
