STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Memorial Day Weekend 2023 may have come and gone with the traditional barbecues, but for families of the brave members of the U.S. Armed Forces it serves as a time to reflect on fallen soldiers who gave their lives so that we remain free.

Members of the Marine Corps League saluted soldiers — those present and deceased — during a formal observance at the league’s Sunnyside headquarters that began with the posting of colors by the Detachment Color Guard and the Presentation of the Wreath by Frank Montella, followed by welcoming remarks by Commandant Robert Geronimo

“On behalf of the detachment I extend a warm welcome to all our guests and sincere thanks for your presence at our memorial service. Semper Fi,” said Geronimo.

The Invocation was delivered by U.S. Marine Corps Chaplain Carmela Montella.

A 21-gun salute was also conducted by U.S. Marine Corps veterans in the presence of members, families and friends, as well as Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis, Borough President Vito Fossella, a representative from Richmond County District Attorney Michael McMahon’s office, Assemblyman Michael Tannousis, City Councilman David Carr, and a representative from Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton’s office.
