National Council of Negro Women hosts 17th annual Harambee luncheon

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The concepts of community, service and celebration were constants throughout the Staten Island Section of the National Council for Negro Women’s (NCNW) 17th annual Harambee luncheon on Saturday.

Harambee is a Swahili word meaning “all pull together,” which is exactly what more than 100 people from across Staten Island did as they gathered at the Old Bermuda Inn in Rossville to honor exemplary community members.

Under this year’s theme of “Honoring Our Hidden Figures,” the Staten Island Section of NCNW leaders presented several awards shining a light on members and their positive contributions to the community.

The honorees received certificates or plaques, depending on the award, as well as proclamations from local officials, including Hanks, State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-North Shore/South Brooklyn), Staten Island District Attorney Michael McMahon, Borough President Vito Fossella and Mayor Eric Adams.
