New Dorp street renamed after community stalwart

The legacy of a stalwart in the Staten Island community was cemented further on April 29 during a rainy ceremony in New Dorp.

The corner of Amboy Road and (ironically) Vincent Avenue was renamed Vincent “Jimmy” Anthony Navarino Way, in honor of the father, grandfather, great-grandfather and highly revered member of the community who died at age 90 on July 16, 2021.

In attendance were Assemblyman Mike Reilly; Councilman David Carr; representatives from the offices of Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, Richmond County District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, and Assemblyman Michael Tannousis; members of the Granito-Smith American Legion; and Navarino’s neighbors, friends and family.

Jimmy’s son, Anthony, spoke to his father’s unwavering generous spirit.

“He was always out in the community trying to help everybody,” said Anthony. “When he first retired and saw people on the block were throwing stuff out, he’d go and get it and take it in, fix it, and bring it back to them. Neighbors on the block donned him as the ‘mayor of the block.’ ... He taught me how to respect everyone I came into contact with. He was a good husband and loved my mom Rose so much.”
