STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Mayor Eric Adams visited Staten Island Monday to mark the 11th anniversary of Hurricane Sandy and open an expansion of a vital piece of storm infrastructure.
Adams gathered members of his administration and local elected officials — Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island/South Brooklyn), Borough President Vito Fossella, State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-North Shore/South Brooklyn), Assemblyman Michael Tannousis (R-East Shore/South Brooklyn), Assemblyman Sam Pirozzolo (R-Mid-Island), and Councilman David Carr (R-Mid-Island) — to announce the newly-opened expansion of the East Shore’s New Creek Bluebelt.
The project dates back decades, transforming an existing, albeit neglected waterway into a natural piece of infrastructure that helps guide rainwater from the surrounding streets in neighborhoods like Midland Beach, Dongan Hills, and Grant City out to the lower New York Bay.
The massive project has transformed a former creek-turned-dumping ground into an open space that also helps protect the surrounding area from heavy rainfall.
