STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Scores of community members and leaders joined together at the intersection of Penbroke Avenue and Conyingham Avenue in Randall Manor to commemorate the legacy of Anthony Varvaro, a former MLB pitcher turned Port Authority police officer, with an official street co-naming Saturday.
Varvaro, a Staten Island native who lived on the block, was a star on the ball field since an early age, starting out as a catcher in the borough’s West Shore Little League. He continued playing through high school as a student athlete, graduating from Curtis High School in 2002. After three years as a member of the St. John’s Red Storm, the right-handed pitcher was drafted to the MLB in 2005 by the Seattle Mariners.
Tragically, on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022, Varvaro was killed on his way to work by a wrong-way driver on the New Jersey Turnpike.
On Saturday, community members and political figures alike collectively commemorated Varvaro by renaming Penbroke Avenue to Anthony Varvaro Way.
