High school students will have the opportunity to work with the Senator on youth mental health legislation.

New York State Senator Samra Brouk is seeking applicants for her inaugural Youth Mental Health Advisory Board. The Advisory Board, which will be convening later this fall, will work with the Senator to offer feedback on legislation designed to meet the mental health needs of younger New Yorkers.

The Advisory Board will be tasked with helping shape and inform policy as it pertains to young people and their mental health. Advisory Board members will be able to share their concerns and feedback on the issues that matter most to them, and will have the unique opportunity to learn about the legislative process from a firsthand perspective.

The Youth Mental Health Advisory Board is open to high school students in grades 9 through 12, who have an interest in mental health. Members of the Advisory Board should expect to converse, share, and collaborate with the Senator and staff regarding issues related to mental health and the challenges that exist for young people in our community. The Youth Mental Health Advisory Board will convene regularly from November 2023 to June of 2024.

Applications must be submitted by Saturday, October 21st. Applications can be submitted online via the Senator’s website at https://tinyurl.com/Brouk-YMHAB

“As Chair of the Senate Mental Health Committee, I have heard stories from young people and their families about the lack of resources that exist, the lengthy wait times that can occur when a family finally finds a provider, and the affordability of care," Senator Samra Brouk said. "Young people in our community deserve to have their voices heard—especially on the issues that affect them most. I look forward to working with the Youth Mental Health Advisory Board to learn more about what they are experiencing, and what New York State can do to better support and invest in its young people.”
