Senator James Skoufis (D, Cornwall)) has secured $100,000 for National Night Out events, which are scheduled to be held throughout Orange County and the region today (Tuesday).

Skoufis and his team distributed funding awards of $10,000 each to police departments in Crawford, Highland Falls, Goshen, Middletown, Mount Hope, New Windsor, Port Jervis, Tuxedo, Wallkill, and Warwick, all of which host National Night Out events.

“Our local police are the backbone of community safety in many of our communities across Orange County,” Skoufis said. “Ensuring that our neighbors continue to see law enforcement as partners in their community’s future is so critical for public safety, and any effort to increase this trust is worthwhile. I am grateful to our local law enforcement for all they do to keep Orange County a place we’re proud to call home.”

Several of Tuesday’s events have already been rescheduled due to impending bad weather on Tuesday night:

  • Warwick’s event has been moved to August 21st.
  • Port Jervis has rescheduled its National Night Out for August 28th.
  • The Town of Wallkill and the City of Newburgh have postponed their festivities until August 13th.
  • The Village of Walden has rescheduled its event for August 17th.
  • The City of Middletown’s event has been canceled; No rain date has been set.

National Night Out, which began in 1984, is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships to bring communities together and make them safer. It is designed to raise drug and crime prevention awareness, generate support for anti-crime efforts, strengthen community spirit, and send a strong message to criminals that crime will not be tolerated. Millions of residents participate in National Night Out events in the U.S. on the first Tuesday in August.
