2 Staten Island Amazon warehouses dubbed dangerous by labor coalition

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A new report has named the most dangerous Amazon warehouses in New York -- using injury rates, missed work and job transfers as its gauge -- and two Staten Island sort and fulfillment centers are listed in the top five.

NYFE said it has released the data -- which is publicly available and is listed in a report on Amazon’s website -- in hopes of passing the Warehouse Worker Injury Reduction Act in the 2024 state budget. The $5 million initiative would require warehouses to mandate annual evaluations to identify hazards and assign fixes, a push that is supported by local elected leaders.

“New York must step up to guarantee that no warehouse workers have to face dangerous conditions to make ends meet,” State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-North Shore/South Brooklyn) said in a statement provided by the NYFE. “The Amazon Labor Union has made great strides in raising awareness about the current safety conditions in warehouses nationwide, and this bill will help address these issues at the root of the problem. The Warehouse Worker Injury Reduction Act is our solution to ensuring warehouses prioritize the safety of their workers. I’m proud to co-sponsor this legislation and help play a part in ensuring every warehouse worker returns home safely.”
