Groundhog Day 2024: Staten Island Chuck ‘probably got it right’ Friday morning
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- On Groundhog Day Friday morning, under a cloudy sky, nearly 200 spectators locked their eyes on Staten Island Chuck as he sluggishly wandered around his den at 7:28 a.m..
“I’m excited. This is my first time. I’m expecting to see Chuck make his prediction. In school, I had science class, and they said there will be clouds, so I don’t think there will be a shadow,” said Cooper Galford, 8, as he waited for this year’s Groundhog Day prediction at the Staten Island Zoo, West Brighton.
Others present at the event included: New York State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton; Staten Island Borough Parks Commissioner Lynda Ricciardone; Assemblymember Michael Tannousis; President of the Freshkills Park Alliance Mark Murphy; Nuno Dos Santos, retail banking director of Citizens Philanthropic Foundation; Staten Island Schools Superintendent Dr. Marion Wilson; Council Member of 2nd Council District Carlina Rivera.
