Island senator’s bill aimed at supporting crime victims passes NY senate

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A bill aimed at strengthening the rights of crime victims recently passed through the New York Senate.
Senate Bill S5502, sponsored by State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-North Shore/South Brooklyn), mandates that the court or district attorney, either at sentencing or the earliest possible moment, provide an informational sheet to crime victims detailing their rights.
“Upholding the rights of victims is not just a courtesy — it is a necessity,” said Scarcella-Spanton. “Reporting a crime is often a daunting first step, and the fear associated with this process is all too common. It is essential for justice and fairness in New York that we extend the same courtesy to victims of crime. By passing this legislation, we are making a significant stride towards a more just and compassionate system, where the voices and rights of victims are acknowledged and respected.”
