STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- New legislation introduced by one of the borough’s state lawmakers would allow New York City to access a fairer share of the state’s federal infrastructure funding for sewer projects in flood-prone neighborhoods.

On Friday, State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-North Shore/South Brooklyn) and Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island/South Brooklyn) announced a new bill that would lift arbitrary, state-imposed caps placed on the amount of federal infrastructure funding that can be allocated to New York City.

“My bill, S8389, directs the state’s Environmental Facilities Corporation (EFC) to allocate funds from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund proportional to population of counties... New York City and Staten Island are in need of these resources, and they should be distributed in an equitable way to make sure we get our fair share,” said Scarcella-Spanton.
