New NYPD task force set to crack down on retail theft on Staten Island this holiday season

McMahon also discussed the formation of a new unit at his office, stating the following:

“Working in direct partnership with Assistant Chief Eger, the heroic men and women of New York’s Finest, and our borough’s retailers, my office’s newly established Retail Recidivist Unit will continue to prosecute shoplifters to the fullest extent of the law and we are grateful to Governor Hochul and State Senator [Jessica] Scarcella-Spanton for securing this pro-public safety provision in this year’s state budget.”

As indicated by McMahon, Scarcella-Spanton has taken steps to protect retail workers. A bill written by the state senator makes the assault of a retail worker a Class E felony, a crime punishable by up to four years in prison.
