How 'Peanut's Law' would protect animal welfare in wake of Peanut the Squirrel controversy

Almost six months after the seizure and death of internet star Peanut the Squirrel sparked massive public outrage, lawmakers and others are supporting a proposed new law they say would prevent similar incidents in the future.

Peanut's owner, Mark Longo, of Pine City, traveled to Albany this week to join legislators and animal welfare activists in support of "Peanut's Law: Humane Animal Protection Act," which has sponsors in both the Assembly and state Senate.

A Senate version of the bill is sponsored by Democrat Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, of New York City.
