Staten Island community center one step closer to new future after $2M in state funding

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Goodhue Community Center has been serving North Shore children for more than 100 years, and on Monday it received $2 million in state funding to help continue that service.
State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-North Shore/South Brooklyn) announced the funding for the New Brighton institution that will go towards the construction of a new community center.
“This center has played an integral role in shaping our community, providing a safe space for our children to learn and grow, and has been a place that brings us all together,” the senator said. “This center will stand as a testament to the resilience and unity of the North Shore of Staten Island.”
Scarcella-Spanton made the announcement surrounded by the center’s students, some of its supporters, Goodhue Center Director Ilene Pappert and Phoebe Boyer — president and CEO of Children’s Aid, which oversees the center.
