STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Elected officials announced more than $500,000 in public funding for the St. George Theatre this week.

State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-North Shore/South Brooklyn) joined Doreen Cugno and Luanne Sorrentino along with several theatre board members Wednesday to announce $250,000 in funding for improved accessibility at the venue.

The $250,000 in state funding Scarcella-Spanton announced Tuesday will go towards improving accessibility for disabled patrons of the theatre.

Specifically, the money will be used for new, more accessible seats in the theatre’s first eight rows, and illumination that will help the visually-impaired better navigate the theatre, Cugno said.

“When I told her about this [funding], she was so excited, because the seats are always the hard thing for her,” Scarcella-Spanton said.
